Contributor Guide

Writing Worlds is an international platform for discovering, experiencing, and publishing creative expression—stories, novels, poetry, photography, artwork, essays, audio, and video.

As a Contributor, you can create, submit, and publish your original creative work here.

Writing Worlds is built around the belief that creative work should have a place to be discovered, experienced, and shared. Every published work is therefore subject to the platform's editorial and community standards.

What Contributor Status Means

Contributor status gives you access to the Studio, where you can create works, save drafts, submit work for editorial review, and build a public profile.

Contributors are part of a creative community dedicated to original expression and meaningful creative work.

Contributor status does not guarantee publication. All works must go through the appropriate review process before they can be published.

How to Create a Work

From the Studio, click "New Work."

Choose a title, original language, and medium for your work. Your work is automatically saved as a draft, allowing you to return to it and continue working at any time from your Studio dashboard.

How Work Classification Works

Writing Worlds uses a simple set of classification fields to help readers discover creative work:

  • Medium — the primary form of the work, such as Poetry, Photography, Audio, or Culinary.
  • Genre — the category or type of work, such as Fiction, Portrait, or Essay.
  • Theme — the ideas explored by the work, such as Memory, Identity, or Journey.
  • Mood — the emotional atmosphere the work creates, such as Melancholic, Hopeful, or Reflective.
  • Keywords — optional search terms that help readers find the work by subject, style, place, material, or concept.

A work's medium is the main creative form, while genre, theme, mood, and keywords help describe and discover it. These fields are controlled and structured so the platform stays searchable, readable, and consistent.

Medium Definitions

Writing Worlds uses a controlled list of mediums. Contributors choose the medium that best describes the primary creative form of the work; contributors cannot create new mediums.

  • Writing — General written creative work that does not fit a more specific written form.
  • Stories — Short-form narrative fiction or creative storytelling.
  • Novels — Long-form narrative works, normally chapter-based.
  • Poetry — Poems and poetic works, with intentional line breaks and stanza spacing preserved.
  • Essays — Reflective, analytical, personal, cultural, critical, or literary nonfiction.
  • Artwork — Painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, or illustration.
  • Photography — Photographic work. A phone photograph is still photography.
  • Audio — Audio-first creative work with a transcript where applicable.
  • Video — Video-first creative work with captions or subtitles and a transcript.
  • Fashion — Fashion design, clothing, costume, textile, and wearable creative work.
  • Culinary — Creative food-focused work and food culture, including recipes and culinary stories.

Fashion remains Fashion even when photographs are used to present it. A photograph of food remains Photography; a recipe or culinary story is Culinary.

How to Save Drafts

Every work you create is automatically saved as a draft.

Drafts are private—only you can see and edit them. They remain associated with your account even if your Contributor period ends.

How to Submit a Work

When your work is ready, open it in the Studio and click "Submit for Review."

This sends your work to the editorial team for consideration. You will receive a notification when the review is complete.

Submitting a work does not guarantee publication. Every submission must meet Writing Worlds' editorial and platform standards.

Editorial Review

Every submission is reviewed by the editorial team.

Reviewers may consider the work's quality, originality, creative value, policy compliance, appropriate categorization, technical completeness, and overall suitability for publication on Writing Worlds.

The purpose of editorial review is not simply to determine whether a work can be published, but whether it is worth publishing on Writing Worlds.

A work may be rejected or returned for changes even when it does not violate a specific platform rule. Publication is based on the overall quality, value, and suitability of the work.

Possible Review Outcomes

  • Approved — Your work has been approved and is ready to be published.
  • Changes requested — The editorial team has suggestions or requirements for improvement. You can edit the work and resubmit it.
  • Not accepted — The work does not meet Writing Worlds' current standards for publication. You are welcome to revise your work and submit a new version where appropriate.

How to Respond to Requested Changes

If changes are requested, open the work in your Studio.

The review notes will be visible to you. Make the requested or appropriate edits, then click "Edit and Resubmit" to send the updated version back for review.

How Publication Works

Once a work has been approved by the editorial team, an Administrator publishes the work.

Published works may then appear on your public profile, in search results, and across other areas of the platform.

Publication is not automatic. Editorial approval is required, and approval does not itself mean that every submission will necessarily be published immediately.

Proposing Collections

Contributors may propose collections that group published works around a clear theme, genre, mood, experience, or creative perspective. A proposal must include a title, description, editorial rationale, category, and 15–20 published works.

Administrators review every proposal. They may approve it, request changes, or reject it. Only an Administrator can publish and curate the official collection. A collection does not transfer ownership of any work, and works must remain published to appear publicly in the collection.

The 14-Day Activation Window

When you first become a Contributor, you have 14 days to meaningfully participate by submitting at least one eligible creative work for editorial review.

This window begins on the day your Contributor access is activated.

What Counts as Meaningful Participation

Submitting at least one eligible creative work for editorial review counts as meaningful participation.

The requirement is to submit qualifying creative work for review, not to guarantee that the work is approved or published.

Once you have made a qualifying submission, your activation requirement is considered satisfied.

Reminders

You will receive email reminders at 7 days, 3 days, and 1 day before your deadline if you have not yet submitted qualifying work.

What Happens When the Window Expires

If the 14-day period ends without a qualifying submission, your Contributor role is automatically changed to Reader.

Your existing published works remain published.

Your drafts remain associated with your account.

You can apply to become a Contributor again in the future according to the platform's re-application rules.

  • Your published works are not deleted.
  • Your drafts remain associated with your account.
  • You may become a Contributor again according to the platform's applicable re-application process.

Ownership of Creative Work

Ownership of submitted creative work remains with the creator, subject to the platform's Terms and applicable licenses.

Writing Worlds does not claim ownership of Contributor work.

You retain the rights you have in your creative expression. You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary rights and permissions to submit the material you provide to Writing Worlds.

Free Publishing Policy

Writing Worlds Contributor publishing is completely free.

There is no cost to submit or publish eligible works.

However, free publishing does not mean unmoderated publishing. All submissions are reviewed for quality, originality, policy compliance, copyright concerns, appropriate categorization, community safety, and technical completeness.

Publication is never guaranteed.

No-Selling Policy

Writing Worlds is a creative publishing and discovery platform.

Contributors do not sell creative works through Writing Worlds. There are no prices, paid downloads, subscriptions for individual works, or marketplace functionality.

If a Contributor uses their content, profile, or links in a way that turns Writing Worlds into a sales channel, the moderation team may address it through the platform's policy systems.

Content Standards

All submitted work must be suitable for consideration as creative expression on Writing Worlds.

Prohibited content includes plagiarism, stolen work, unauthorized copyrighted material, impersonation, malicious content, illegal content, spam, abusive or harassing content, deceptive commercial promotion, and content designed to circumvent moderation.

The use of AI does not exempt a work from these standards.

Copyright and Originality Expectations

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to submit your work.

This includes text, images, audio, video, artwork, and any other material included in a submission.

Only submit work you created or have explicit permission or appropriate rights to use.

If your work includes media created by others, you must have the necessary rights or licenses.

AI-Assisted and AI-Generated Content

Writing Worlds allows AI-assisted and AI-generated creative content.

Contributors may use artificial intelligence tools in creating or developing creative work, including writing, editing, brainstorming, image generation, artwork, audio, video, or other forms of creative assistance.

However, AI-generated or AI-assisted content is not automatically eligible for publication.

All AI-assisted and AI-generated submissions go through the same editorial review process as other work.

The editorial team may consider the work's quality, creative value, originality, coherence, relevance, policy compliance, and overall value to the Writing Worlds community.

The central question is not simply whether AI was used.

The central question is:

Is this work worth publishing on Writing Worlds?

A work that uses AI may be published when the editorial team determines that it meets Writing Worlds' standards and is genuinely worth publishing. The use of AI alone is neither an automatic reason for acceptance nor an automatic reason for rejection.

Contributors remain responsible for the work they submit, including its accuracy where applicable, originality, rights, permissions, and compliance with Writing Worlds policies.

AI-generated or AI-assisted work must not contain plagiarism, stolen material, unauthorized copyrighted material, impersonation, deceptive content, or other prohibited content.

Writing Worlds may ask a Contributor to disclose or explain the use of AI in a submission when necessary for editorial or policy purposes.

Where disclosure is requested or required, Contributors should provide accurate information about how AI was used in creating the work.

Community Behavior

Writing Worlds is a respectful creative space.

Engage with other Contributors and readers constructively.

Harassment, abuse, threats, and disruptive behavior are not tolerated and may result in account restrictions or other action under the platform's policies.

Profiles and Followers

Your public profile shows your display name, bio, and published works.

Readers can follow you to see your new publications.

You can also follow other Contributors whose work you enjoy.

Building a profile helps readers discover your creative work and allows your work to become part of the wider Writing Worlds community.

External Links & Monetization

You may share relevant links to your own website, portfolio, or external platform.

Writing Worlds is free to publish on and does not process sales or payments for Contributor works.

Any external transaction is handled outside Writing Worlds.

External links must still comply with Writing Worlds' policies. Using external links to circumvent the platform's no-selling policy or otherwise abuse the platform may result in moderation action.

Analytics

The Studio provides analytics for your published works, including views, reads, engagement, likes, bookmarks, comments, and new followers.

These insights help you understand how your work resonates with readers.

Analytics are provided as a tool for understanding audience engagement and do not guarantee future publication, reach, or promotion.

Notifications

You will receive notifications about editorial decisions, follower activity, and platform updates.

You can manage your notification preferences in Settings to control which communications you receive.

Some important platform, security, or account-related communications may still be sent when necessary to operate the service.

Publication Is Not Permanent Immunity

Publication does not permanently exempt your work from Writing Worlds' policies.

Published works remain subject to the platform's moderation standards.

Published works can be reported, reviewed, restricted, or removed if they are later found to violate community standards, copyright requirements, platform policies, or other applicable rules.

This helps keep Writing Worlds safe, respectful, and valuable for everyone.

How to Contact and Report Issues

If you encounter an issue or need to report content that may violate Writing Worlds policies, use the Reports feature in the main navigation.

For other questions or concerns, check the platform's help resources.
